Human Rights Watch Again Accuses Syria Of "Barrel Bomb" Damage Done By Others

In February we pointed to a Human Rights Watch tweet that showed a picture of the Kurdish-Syrian city Kobane destroyed by U.S. bombing. The HRW tweet falsely claimed that the damage was caused by Syrian government "barrel bombs".

HRW is at it again. Today Kenneth Ross, director of Human Rights Watch tweeted this:

bigger

Neither does the picture fit to anything in Aleppo, nor could the damage shown reasonable have been achieved by "barrel bombs" thrown form helicopters.

The Kenneth Roth tweet links to a video uploaded by some Armanian website owner on May 5.

But as Adam Johnson of Fair.org points out the picture is a still from a pirated copy of a video produced and uploaded on March 8 by the Danish TV station DR Nyheder. The original caption to that video is:

Unikke tv-optagelser med drone viser omfanget af ødelæggelserne efter Israels bombardement af Gaza i sommer.

The drone video shows the immense damage done by last summer's Israeli bombing of Gaza.

HRW also used a wrongly attribute picture to claim that a person hurt by Nazis in Ukraine was a victim of the Russian president Putin.

This is thereby at least the third time HRW is using a wrongly attributed pictures to depict current enemies of U.S. imperialism as having causing the damage the U.S. empire and/or its friends have caused.

That is not mere bias by HRW. It is willful fraud.

HRW is the original human rights 'weapon'. Created at Helsinki, funded by the State Department, its job was - and is - to oversee the attack on the US' enemies du jour on human rights grounds and to overlook the uniformly much greater crimes of the US' allies du jour.

NGO-land is as corrupt as MSM-land is as corrupt as USG-land.

It's good you catch them in this instance substituting the monstrous crimes of the US's #1 partner in crime for the ersatz crimes of the US #1 enemy du jour ... but anyone who's paying any attention pays no attention to the corrupt hacks at HRW.

This is very good work though. Thanks, b.

HRW is the original 'weaponized' human rights Oracle, an 'NGO' created By the USG after Helsinki, funded by the US State Department, to oversee the demonization of the US' enemies du jour on human rights grounds while overlooking the always much greater crimes of its vassals and 'friends'.

Here you've caught 'em doing both at once. Well-done, b.

Here's one of one hundred and eleven that I cut and pasted ...

80 - The day after

Unit: Not for publication • Rank: Lieutenant • Location: Gaza City

Part of the [military] engineering rationale, of what’s called ‘the day after’ – I don’t know if that’s a term that gets published – is that when we blow up and raze areas, we can in effect sterilize them.

Throughout the period of combat, one keeps in mind that there is this thing called ‘the day after,’ which is: the day we leave [the Gaza Strip], the more [areas] left wide-open and as ‘clean’ as possible – the better.

One decides on a certain line – during the days after Operation ‘Cast Lead’ it was 300 meters from the fence – and it’s leveled, flattened. Doesn’t matter if there are groves there, doesn’t matter if there are houses, doesn’t matter if there are gas stations – it’s all flattened because we are at war, so we are allowed to.

You can justify anything you do during wartime...

Everything suddenly sounds reasonable even though it isn’t really reasonable.

We had a few D9s (armored bulldozers) in our battalion and I can attest that the D9s alone destroyed hundreds of structures. It was in the debriefing.

There were a few more structures that we blew up in the end. Obviously there were all kinds of other things, but the D9 was the main tool, it doesn’t stop working.

Anything that looks suspicious, whether it’s just to clear a path, whether it’s some other thing, whatever – it takes it down. That’s the mission.

That is not mere bias by HRW. It is willful fraud.

And just what isn't fraud from those quarters; even 'facts' are used fraudulently, seamlessly wedded to some deception or intentional misrepresentation. Repeating these frauds only enhances their credibility with the unknowledgeable. Just the other day BBC was still shilling their favourite BUK Missile downing MH-17, for craps sake, the details will fade from memory but BUK and MH-17 will remain welded in the memory. Just turn off the shite and walk away.

Early life [edit]

Kenneth Roth, a graduate of Yale Law School and Brown University, was drawn to human rights causes through his Jewish father's experience of fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938. His father would keep his three young sons quiet as he cut their hair by telling tales of their grandfather's butcher shop in Frankfurt, Germany. As they grew older, he told them about living under the Nazis as a young boy and fleeing Germany in July 1938.[citation needed]

the immense destruction shown in the photo above is absolutely comparable to that in Aleppo, or that in Fallujah, Yarmouk, Kobani, Najaf, etc. for that matter. Uncle Sam and his shills and minions are so steeped in the blood of innocent lives that bald face lying seems to be the only strategy left. and doubling down on the slaughter.

"As bad as Amnesty, PEN, Reporters Without Borders, and so many other 'human rights' groups are, Human Rights Watch is the gold standard of using fraud and lies to promote Zionist goals:  "Human Rights Watch Again Accuses Syria Of "Barrel Bomb" Damage Done By Others"

"Free expression group PEN America gets sponsored by apartheid Israel":

"The Israeli sponsorship of the World Voices festival suggests views at PEN’s America Center which extend beyond a Western liberal reification of “freedom of speech” over basic values of responsibility and anti-racism.

The association with Israel seems to stem from the appointment of Suzanne Nossel as the executive director of PEN American Center last year. Nossel had previously attracted controversy during her brief stint as head of Amnesty International’s US office. Before that, as her whitewashed biography on the PEN America website puts it, she worked for the US State Department and the US mission to the United Nations and served as a board member of Human Rights Watch.

As a classic example of the “revolving door,” Nossel has brought the influence of the US government to the nongovernmental organizations in which she works — the same groups which have often provided the selective arguments about human rights with which Washington justifies its wars.

She has also been a staunch supporter of Israel. In 2005, for example, she wrote in Dissent magazine that “Longstanding US perceptions of the UN membership as anti-Western, unprincipled, motivated by petty biases, and dominated by a herd mentality stem largely from— and are given continuing basis by —the body’s history of anti-Israel conduct … Israel became something like the proverbial friendless kid in a schoolyard, always attacked and in need of constant help.”

While working for the State Department in 2011 she reasserted her views, saying: ”At the top of our list is our defense of Israel, and Israel’s right to fair treatment at the [UN] Human Rights Council. This is the most challenging issue we face.”

And in 2012, she rejected the Goldstone report, the findings of a UN investigation into Israel’s slaughter in Gaza in late 2008 and early 2009, saying that the paper put “the most negative possible spin that you could put on Israeli behavior … It draws a series of inferences about Israel’s motives and behavior that are simply not supported by the facts … We do take exception to that.”"

Roth has since said; "My bad", and inserted a real pic of devastated Aleppo. Somehow 'proving' his point in his own mind that Assad has flattened Aleppo with "barrel bombs", and the destruction has nothing to do with a years long foreign mercenary occupation.

And still, the BBC image he links to has the following text, alongside the 'barrel bomb' propaganda, directly below the actual image of Aleppo - but of course no indication of whether this is gov held Aleppo, or rebel held Aleppo -

Armed opposition groups in Aleppo were also accused of committing war crimes by using imprecise weapons such as mortars and improvised rockets fitted with gas canisters called "hell cannons" in attacks that killed at least 600 civilians in 2014.

Israeli defense minister promises to kill more civilians and threatens to nuke Iran

Submitted by Asa Winstanley on Wed, 05/06/2015 - 22:40

Moshe Yaalon speaking at the 2015 Shurat HaDin conference.

Israeli defense minister Moshe Yaalon on Tuesday said Israel would attack entire civilian neighborhoods during any future assault on Gaza or Lebanon.

Speaking at a conference in Jerusalem, Yaalon threatened that “we are going to hurt Lebanese civilians to include kids of the family. We went through a very long deep discussion … we did it then, we did it in [the] Gaza Strip, we are going to do it in any round of hostilities in the future.”

Relating a July 2013 meeting with UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, Yaalon recalled promising Israel would bomb the entire Gaza City neighborhood of Shujaiya.

He showed Ban photos of villages in Lebanon and of “certain neighborhoods in Gaza, to include well-known Shujaiya, with many red spots” which he claimed were “terror assets in the densely populated urban area. And I said – July 2013 – we are going to hit it.”

Yaalon was true to his word. The Shujaiya massacre was among the most brutal examples of Israeli war crimes during last summer’s attack on the Gaza Strip.

Israel killed 2,257 Palestinians during the 51-day assault, according to the United Nations monitoring group OCHA. Of that number, OCHA says 70 percent were civilians, including 563 children (Defence for Children International–Palestine has documented 547 child deaths).

The 20 July 2014 attack on Shujaiya was the most bloody day of the war, when Israel bombed the entire neighborhood indiscriminately. Initial reports on the day said 60 bodies had been brought out of the rubble. Later reports suggested death tolls of 90 or 120.

He complained that he had been unable to visit European countries because of the possibility he could have been arrested for suspected war crimes under universal jurisdiction law: “I prefer not to go to [the] UK, to London for about 10 years, or to Spain for a while.”

“Collateral damage”
In 2011, under Israeli pressure, the UK government changed its laws to make it easier for Israeli war crimes suspects to visit the country. Although the changes have meant that several high-level Israeli politicians and military officers have been able to visit since, in 2013 retired Major-General Doron Almog canceled a visit to London because of an outstanding warrant for his arrest related to war crimes committed in the Gaza Strip.
Yaalon lamented that Israeli soldiers now have to be taught that “we should be ready to give up a visit to London … but it’s not fair, it is not just.”

He also described criticism of Israel in international bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council as a “war after the war” and advocated that “we should fight them back.”
He said there should be no investigations of Israeli soldiers just because of “collateral damage” – a euphemism for the killing of civilians.

HRW is a fully funded arm of the extremist Zionist-Fundamentalist Christian cabal of the Empire. Another CIA/Mossad infiltrated propaganda wing of the organized criminal gangs responsible for constant chaos on a worldwide scale. Anyone who takes for truth the conclusions reached by HRW are nothing more than coconspirators in their criminality.

Posted by: Charles Fasola | May 9 2015 15:50 utc | 16

Another thing I noticed while perusing HRW tweets(all of them, not just Roth's) was a peppering of persistent, regular, and content-free whinge-posts about NGOs being 'attacked', by governments, activists, etc. Sort of a "Save The Whales" campaign, as if HRW et al were somehow sacrosanct in their wholesomeness.

To put it bluntly, HRW cries out in pain as it strikes us.

Amnesty whitewashes another massacre

Context-challenged - by design

The ongoing crimes perpetrated against Gaza are chronic and, indeed, systematic. Arnon Soffer, one of Israel's Dr Strangelove types and "intellectual father of the wall", had this to say about the enclave:

Q (Ruthie Blum): Will Israel be prepared to fight this war?
Arnon Soffer: [...] Instead of entering Gaza, the way we did last week, we will tell the Palestinians that if a single missile is fired over the fence, we will fire 10 in response. And women and children will be killed, and houses will be destroyed.

After the fifth such incident, Palestinian mothers won't allow their husbands to shoot Kassams, because they will know what's waiting for them.

Second of all, when 2.5 million people live in a closed-off Gaza, it's going to be a human catastrophe. Those people will become even bigger animals than they are today, with the aid of an insane fundamentalist Islam.

The pressure at the border will be awful. It's going to be a terrible war.

So, if we want to remain alive, we will have to kill and kill and kill.

All day, every day.5

To determine the reasons behind Israeli actions, one only has to read what such Dr Strangeloves say; it is no secret. The aim is to create miserable conditions to drive the Palestinians off their land, warehouse the population in an open air prison called Gaza, and to repress any Palestinian resistance disproportionately.

Israelis have to "kill and kill and kill, all day".

Such pathological reasoning puts Israeli actions into perspective; they are major crimes, possibly genocidal. Recognition of such crimes has some consequences.

First, the nature of the crimes requires their recognition as crimes against humanity, arguably one of the most serious crimes under international law. Second, Israeli crimes put the violence of the Palestinian resistance into perspective; Palestinians have a legitimate right to defend themselves against the occupying power. Third, the long history of violence perpetrated against the Palestinians, and the resulting power imbalance, suggests that one should be in solidarity with the victim, not the aggressor.

Amnesty, though, refuses to acknowledge the serious nature of Israeli crimes, by using an intellectually bankrupt subterfuge. It insists that as a rights-based organisation it cannot refer to historical context; doing so would be considered "political", in its warped jargon. An examination of what Amnesty considers as "background" in its reports confirms that there is virtually no reference to relevant history or context, such as the prior Israeli attacks on Gaza, who initiated those attacks, the Goldstone Report, and so on. Hey presto! Now there is no need to mention serious crimes.

It also doesn't recognise the nature of the Palestinian resistance, and their right to self-defence. Nowhere does Amnesty International acknowledge that Palestinians are entitled to defend themselves against Israel's military occupation. Finally, the rights group cannot express solidarity with the victim because, hey, "both sides" are victims!

At this point, once Amnesty has chosen to ignore the serious Israeli crimes, it takes on the Mother Teresa role of sitting on the fence castigating "both sides" for non-compliance with international humanitarian law that determines the rules of war. Thus, Amnesty criticises Israel not for the transgression of attacking Gaza, but for utilising excessive force or targeting civilians. The group's favourite term to describe such events is "disproportionate". This is problematic because it suggests that there is no problem with the nature of the action, just with the means or scale of it. While Amnesty bleats that a one-ton bomb in a refugee camp is disproportionate, it would seem that using a 100kg bomb would be acceptable. Another favoured term is "conflict", a state of affairs where both sides are at fault, both are at once victims and transgressors.

Notice that while Amnesty avoids recognising major crimes by using its rights-based framework, it suddenly changes its hat, and takes on a very legalistic approach to criticise the violence perpetrated by the Palestinians. It manages then to list the full panoply of international humanitarian law which it deems to be applicable.

The key thing to watch in the upcoming International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation of the 2014 massacre will be whether the court will copy the Amnesty approach. Any investigation that doesn't focus on the cause of the violence and who initiated it will result in another fraud, and no pixel of justice.

Reminds me of Pyatt tweeting out "evidence" of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Clearly, this is the MO of the insidious neocon/liberal interventionist operative. 1) Create some kind of "fact" to support a dubious claim bolstering a particular opinion; 2) Plant fabricated "evidence" in the press; 3) Get public official to cite media reports of "evidence". Cheney on Meet the Press comes to mind as well. Social media streamlines the process and provides plausible deniability as to the origin of the "evidence".

Mr Roth's choice of these pictures of first US and then Israeli destruction in stories about the Syrian regime's destructive nature seem, as he writes in his tweet, 'telling' Could it be he is actually trying to show the hypocrisy of singling out the Syrian regime for these atrocities even if they are valid and documented.

Roth doesn't seem stupid and with all the Flying Monkeys on the web these days scrutinizing reports these pictures must be intentional comparisons of destruction and killing of civilians by all groups and coalitions.

Roth is also being called an Israel hater for using the Gaza film to make his point.

Posted by: Wayoutwest | May 9 2015 18:46 utc | 23

That sack of shit Kenneth Roth, is not only happy to cover up and mitigate Israeli terrorism against Palestinians, but Roth uses that evidence as an excellent future propaganda opportunity tool for similar destruction of innocence in other Empire designated enemy areas around the globe.

And when Western/ Western proxies and Allied terrorism and genocide happens in real time, whatever video and photo evidence emerges from that which should be used to condemn and incriminate those guilty, Roth only sees how incriminating evidence can be used for manipulative lies in service of western terrorism and domination in the future.

Ross despicable nature is endlessly evidenced by his own actions.

Further on the 2014 Israeli Massacre in Gaza and Amnesty International's - that other human rights oracle's - reporting thereon ... Amnesty International: Whitewashing Another Massacre.

By Paul de Rooij. It's reposted all over, I saw it at counterpunch and repost it with links to some more of its references than linked at cp.

One I would like to read is

Kirsten Sellars, The Rise and Rise of Human Rights, Sutton Publishing, 29 April 2002. Herein she discusses the origin of Human Rights Watch.

What does the world and the especially do the Palestinians have to look forward to? I paraphrase Arnon Soffer, turn his words around and describe the world's and certainly the Palestinians view of Israel and the Israelis ...
In Israel those people will become even bigger animals than they are today, with the aid of an insane fundamentalist Judaism. The pressure at the [Gaza] border will be awful. It’s going to be a terrible war. ... The Israelis feel, if they want to occupy all of Palestine, they will have to kill and kill and kill. All day, every day.

Barack Obama needs to recognize the Palestinian State within the 1967 borders, to send the US 6th Fleet to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, and to deliver the $3 billion/year formerly delivered to Israeli in aid of their Palestinian genocide to the Palestinians themselves ... for the next decade ... in partial recompense for six decades of crimes perpetrated by the USG against the Palestinians.

As nearly as I can gauge, now that the US economy remains moribund and immune to further QEn jissing, 'Plan Z for 2016' is to mobilize the US herd with Gellerian fear tactics as a 'shiney object' while replacing US work campers with 40,000,000 Blue Visas second-class laborers, and an UNLIMITED number of H-1B Hindu high-tech zogbots, then start consolidating everything on behalf of the Ubers hard after 2016, ...as the 97,000,000 US homeless and jobless who are now 'non-persons' can attest ...and more to follow with the advent of the Uber's secret TPP.

I drove past an intersection today that used to have an old homeless guy selling the local advertising sheet so he could buy food and water, smokes and booze, but there was only a plastic funeral flower heart at his spot, and a full 40-ounce OE800 malt liquor bottle in tribute of his passing.

We may soon become homeless and jobless 'non-persons' too, but the Ubers can never destroy our humanity or community, which they have forever lost, like the soul-less vampire spawn of Satan that they are. Share your bananas, it's the simple secret key. Satan never shares. Only flash. Only glitter. Only hilarious laughter, frantically scouring the room for their next blood meal.

Where are our secret Jacobines, to fund the trials and the guillotines?

That does a disservice to animals. Animals don't organize into packs to hunt and kill each others of their own specie, simple for sport, or the grounds-keeping.

"We won, you lost. It's just business, get over it. NOW GET OFF OUR LAND~!"

You're not likely to hear that Triumphal Exceptionalism in the animal world, ...which proves Ubers have become a different species than human. As far as I can tell, the cynical use of "human rights" as a motive for US foreign policy was a product of the ... forced reforms? ... in the US government of the 1960s/70s forced by events like the Vietnam War, the rash of political assassinations, and Watergate. It began to explicitly appear in academia and as official policy in the mid-seventies. (I think this n-gram bears me out on this). It described in this Carter speech: Universal Declaration of Human Rights Remarks at a White House Meeting Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Declaration's Signing. [1]

Following the loss of the Vietnam War, rebellion at home, detente with the USSR, and the establishing of relations with the PRC, the US could no longer use simple-minded "anti-Communism" as a policy. It needed a way to regain the moral high ground in its propaganda and a new excuse for inserting itself into situations around the globe - this became a focus on "human rights". This change of focus from anti-Communism to Human Rights still provided, domestically, a reason for pressuring the USSR and China for their social policies without explicitly attacking the fundamental ideology of the Communist bloc.

The US faced another problem abroad. The success of the Vietnamese People in liberating the South from the US-style of imperial possession (ass opposed to the European variety) set a big precedent, and put two of the most vile of US-backed dictators - Iran and Nicaragua - under threat. The US needed a new motive for replacing these regimes with ones that "ensured human rights". In both cases the US withdrew support for the dictators of the Shah and Somoza family in the hopes of having a say over who came to power.

There were changes domestically in the US as well. Carter oversaw another CIA house-cleaning. This included the firing of some 800 CIA officers -- including George HW Bush removal as director.

When the Reagan/Bush counter-revolution came into power, it tried to reverse these changes. It once again made the destruction of Communism as a fundamental goal of US foreign policy. Human rights in US-backed dictatorships was again ignored. It wasn't just the US offensive actions in the Third World (Grenada, Afghanistan). Reagan went so far as to try reverse some of the mid-70s revolutions the US had helped make possible (if not directly then by cutting off of aid): in Nicaragua, Reagan supported the remnants if the Somoza regime in their battle against the Sandinistas. Reagan pressured Iran by supporting Iraq's invasion against the Islamic Revolution.

But the human rights focus really expanded after the USSR dismantled itself. Before terrorism, human rights and ethnic conflict provided the propaganda excuses for military action around the globe.

I wonder WayOutWest - is there any misdeed so blatant you won't try and invent a cover story for? WoW's now treats us with:

"Maybe this fraud was actually a clever joke!"

Really, when you choose a side (as you have chosen ISIL and apparently Mr. Roth) you put them on quite a pedestal.

NoReply @ 36-39: Nice rants all, and right on point.

I didn't know anything about Ken Roth when these incidents began but I sensed something interesting was happening. HRW wasn't high on my list of accurate sources for unbiased information either.

I found out that Roth is a Jewish anti-Zionist who has long been harshly critical of Israel and has been accused by the ADL of using 'classic anti-Semitic stereotypes'.

Clueless reactionary responses to these clever exposures of Western/Israeli murder and mayhem are to be expected but some people see what hypocrisy is being exposed here.

@NoReply Phorusrhacidae? They were dinosaurs.

Cold-hole redux? I was wondering what happened to that guy.

Human Rights Watch and the rest of its kind, together with the whole NGO complex in general, were long ago co-opted by nefarious elements of the corporate state to serve as vehicles of soft power. Infiltration and subversion of non-capitalist/non-western societies and the subsequent shaping of public opinion through propaganda within those societies is their primary function and they do this by insidiously undermining cultures from within, making them lose their self-confidence. They serve to legitimate Western institutions while de-legitimating the non-West's own counterparts.

The world would probably be better off without them.

- Is HRW in the pocket of the US ??

Disgusting dogsbodies of tptb.
"Is HRW in the pocket of the US??" That's a good one!

I wonder why they cry barrel bomb when at the same time they apparently are ok with cluster bombs. This is the usual slight o fhand to get people mind off the fact that there is no reason for the United States should be involved in this matter. It is clear that none of the rebels are from Syria so what you have is an invasion.

HRW is as believable as the so called "bought and paid for" mainstream media. aka the cia's mouth piece, or as believable as the known pathological liars that comprise the government!

A HRW organization that overlooks some of the worst offenders - shhh - Saudi Arabia has some indiscriminate bombing to attend to, maybe if we're really quiet HRW won't notice.

What happens when HRW judges that AmeriKa is in violation?
Nothing.
That's the kind of organization that is.

Posted by: farflungstar | May 11 2015 16:35 utc | 54

I thought HRW was a (fairly) independant organisation ...........

Posted by: Willy2 | May 11 2015 17:27 utc | 55

Beware the NGOs! I have no idea if any of these organizations used to be what they say they are, but now it's all false advertising. They are destructive and perhaps downright evil, and one goal is to spread USG lying propaganda as seen here very clearly. Amnesty Internat'l has been captured by the PTB and now engages in similar bs.

But propaganda is spread far and wide by the US Empire. Hard to get away from it. Thanks for exposing this tidbit of lying bs.

Not sure if it has been posted (the youtube video)

It's telling that many people use Roth's clever, personal Gorilla Theatre that exposes US and their minions crimes to discredit reports of any identical crimes perpetuated by Assad.

@58 wow... the usa has it's own problems without going to other parts of the world and turning countries into military war zones.. stick to baltimore or where-ever the next made in the usa military war zone is, instead of crapping all over the planet.. i am sure you want to turn this into it is all about assad, or obama, or saddam, but for fucking once realize it is about a shitty exceptional nation called the usa that is shitting all over the planet.. it has to stop..

HRW presents a fairly Liberal Zionist interpretation of events in the Middle East, which leads them to be criticized not only by the reality-based community, but also by right-wing Zionist nutjobs, like the ADL. HRW uses this criticism from different quarters to argue that their coverage must be objective, since they are besieged by all sides. For the most part, the former Helsinki Watch reflects the priorities of the US State Department, criticizing US foes far more than its friends.
